We Heart Seattle

Jul 07, 2022 4:30 PM

We are meeting at Angelo's Restaurant, 601  153rd St, Buruien.

Agency’s Mission: We Heart Seattle is an action-based, boots-on-the-ground movement that organizes trash cleanups in our public spaces and offers resources to those in need. Through our direct civic engagement we lead the way to a more compassionate and healthy community. Additional context: WHS is a non-partisan, boots-on-the-ground movement that engages the community in organized litter removal events, typically located in difficult-to-access yet highly valuable public spaces that city workers cannot or will not access. WHS serves virtually all residents and workers in Seattle because we tackle some of the most difficult and visible public space cleanup projects in the city, including some of Seattle’s most dramatic greenspaces and homeless encampments of various sizes. WHS is a movement where ordinary citizens are activated into taking action to make our city safer and more beautiful. WHS also provides personalized, compassionate, and respectful outreach support to hundreds of people experiencing homelessness. WHS utilizes a small team of staff and volunteers who possess lived experience, resourcefulness, and eagerness to help people living outdoors, using a friction-free approach to provide resources and remove barriers to housing. In the 20 months since WHS’s inception, WHS has achieved the following key metrics: • Held 180 litter pick events covering public spaces in 29 distinct Seattle zip codes. • Engaged 600-700 volunteers providing 5,800 volunteer hours • Removed 588,800 pounds of litter • Removed housing barriers for hundreds and assisted 113 people move inside • Contracted with 6 people with lived experience to be part-time trash cleaners and outreach staff • Community service volunteers provided over 1000 hours of labor by working off court fines through Seattle Municipal Court.
